Single Ply Membranes
Although most domestic householders are unaware of these products, they have been used successfully over the past 40 years, predominantly in the commercial and industrial sectors. Companies and organisations, such as British Airways, Hilton Hotels, BT and many others, have this installed on their roofs. In our local area buildings such as the Civic Centre (Reading), Yellow Pages (Reading), the new Blade Building (Reading), and ancillary buildings at Heathrow T5 are but a few of the many roofs with this type of installation.
To install a single ply roof correctly, the installer must be well trained and the manufacturers therefore have a strict training and licensing policy to ensure that their systems are only fitted by competent people. It takes approximately two years to train an operative before they can be allowed to install at a basic level but at least four years before they can be deemed a quality installer. This is the main reason why the domestic client is unaware of these products – the companies that are large enough to consider such training and be allowed to install these products are simply not interested in a small domestic roof.

Elastomeric Felt Membranes
There are many of these membranes on the market, most of which are of a good quality provided they are fitted by well trained operatives. This is the type of system that you would normally expect to see on a domestic flat roof, usually with a green or a blue/grey mineral finish.
